RABIES - Don't leave the issue unheard | The Self Story (TSS)

Rabies is a viral infection caused by biting or licking on the wound by infected animals. It spreads when an animal bites or a person comes in contact with their saliva on an open wound. The wild animals that can get rabies are raccoons, coyotes, bats, foxes, etc. It can also infect domestic animals like dogs, cats, cattle, etc. 

It is most common in countries where stray dogs are present, especially in Africa and Asia. 

 

SYMPTOMS

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Anxiety
  • Hydrophobia (fear of water)
  • Photophobia (fear of light)
  • Coma
  • Death

 

TREATMENT

  • If it is not treated before any symptoms, it may prove fatal, and a person may die.
  • If it is treated before any symptoms, it may not prove fatal, and a person may be cured with proper treatment.

 

PRECAUTIONS

 

Do’s 

  • Immediately approach the doctor when get bitten by an animal.
  • Keep watch on your pet when outside.
  • Get your pet vaccinated periodically.
  • Keep your pet away from wild animals.

 

Don’t

  • Try not to come in contact with the saliva of an animal.
  • Do not kiss your pet on the mouth.
  • Avoid licking by your pet.

 

NEWS

  • WHO states that 36% of the world’s rabies death occur in India.

Ø  Acute shortage of anti-rabies vaccines faced by civic bodies since last year.
